Port of Sines strengthens its leadership

The port of Sines strengthened its leading position in the national port sector (Continental) last year, by reinforcing its market share in relation to the movement of goods.

With a 17% increase in cargo handled in 2015, the port of Sines is now worth the same as all the others combined in the Mainland, having closed the year with a total of around 44 million tons moved, corresponding to about 49.5% of the national total.

According to the AMT (Mobility and Transport Authority), the volume of cargo handled last year by leading Mainland commercial ports amounted to 88.9 million tons of cargo, which translates into an increase of 7.5% the volume registered in 2014. "This is the highest value ever due to the conduct of the ports of Sines, Leixões and Aveiro", which also reached historical highs, according to AMT.

Mainland ports in 2015 recorded a total of 10.710 call to port of ships of various types, corresponding to a gross handling of 190.4 million GT ('gross tonnage'), ​​respectively 2.2% and 10.2% higher values than those observed in 2014
