Movement in ports increased by 3.5% in the first quarter

The movement of goods in the eight Continental ports totaled 21.7 million tons of cargo.
The movement of goods in the eight Continental ports totaled 21.7 million tons of cargo in the first three months of the year, increasing by 3.5% over the same period of 2015. The growth from January to March, the data collected by the Authority for Mobility and Transport (AMT) shows, was mainly due to the port of Sines, worth 52% of the market.
 
The volume of cargo in this port was over 11.3 million tons, a rise of 13.4%. Viana do Castelo, which is a small slice of the ports market, grew 17.2% and the port of Faro rose 2.1%. The movements in the ports of Setúbal, Figueira da Foz, Leixoes, Aveiro and Lisbon, however, decreased, with the sharpest decline of 12.7% happening in Figueira.
