Nitin Gadkari, the Indian Minister for Maritime and Land Transport, said the Indian shipping industry has the potential to generate 4 million direct jobs and 6 million indirect jobs over the next five years, the international press recently reported.

According to the same sources, the minister recalled the impetus given by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to the port sector and said that his Ministry has prepared projects with a potential investment of 16.2 billion euros, to be presented at the Indian Maritime Summit, to be held in Mumbai from 14 to 16 April.

Projects will include 27 industrial clusters based on ports, promotion of coastal shipping and development of inland navigation ways integrated in the Sagarmala project (an initiative of the Government aimed at developing port infrastructure along the 7,500 km of the country's coast and representing an investment of approximately 94 million euro).

Nitin Gadkari has also expressed the urgency of reducing logistics costs to make Indian exports more competitive. He also took the opportunity to detail some of the main initiatives promoted by the Government in this area, from new ports to port modernization programs, hinterland connections, multimodal platforms and building clusters, naval repair and ship recycling.
