CO2 emissions a priority for the IMO Committee

18 Abr
A sessão do MEPC da IMO procurará recolher dados dos navios sobre emissões de CO2.

Begining today and until April 22, in London, a session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) during which issues will be discussed regarding the collection of ship data on CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, the reduction of these emissions and the international convention on the management of ballast water.

The meeting takes place just days before the presentation before signature of the agreement reached in Paris in December 2015 at the United Nations climate change conference (COP.21), which will take place in April 22 in New York, and at a time when the lack of international consensus on some of these issues threatens to delay its effective implementation.

One of the bodies that have warned about this lack of consensus is the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the main international shipping organization. Recently, ICS developed recommendations for discussion at the meeting that begins today, warning of the risks of not progressing towards the environmental objectives set by the United Nations on the one hand, and the need to standardize procedures in shipping, on the other.
